Did you know Jesus cares about Return on Investment (ROI)? In the gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, we discover a parable Jesus told on the subject. A story of a business owner leaving behind three employees with cash on hand to do business in a certain city. The owner returned to find two of his employees had invested and gained a return, while one had not. This one employee had been so anxious to not lose the business owner’s cash that he did nothing at all with it.
He saved it. Responsible right? Wrong. The owner was angry. Doing something is always better than doing nothing.
We all want to live lives of consequence. We were created to matter - to God, to our communities, to our families - but the value we bring is not found in what we don’t do, the risks we don’t take. Rather, the value of our one life is to spend it all on the field for Jesus. We don’t want to get to the end of our life and have sat on one drop of value we could have invested for the world to know more of God’s love in Jesus. Our time, talents, money, and our very lives depend on the divine investment of God in the world to leave it better than when we found it.
Westminster Presbyterian Church is just one of the ways we believe God is doing just that. As we journey into a new ministry year together, might we embrace a holy carelessness and spend ourselves fully in the eternally meaningful cause of Christ in our generation for this specific time and place. In spending ourselves for God’s kingdom, we find the purpose we have always longed for - we find our truest selves. The self that matters to God forever and makes us a better neighbor in the world today. So, let’s jump in with two feet together as God leads us into a new year!
Join me in prayer as we envision together the ministry God has given us to steward this next year - and to feel the glory of working with Jesus doing something of eternal value!
With much love and excitement for our year ahead,
Pastor Trey
